Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama split after six year romance, admit they're 'better as best friends'
Demi Lovato and Wilmer Valderrama have split after six years together.
The couple announced their decision to end their relationship in a joint statement on social media, where they claimed to be "better as best friends".
"After almost 6 loving and wonderful years together, we have decided to end our relationship," the statement began.
"This was an incredibly difficult decision for both of us, but we have realized more than anything that we are better as best friends. We will always be supportive of one another. Thank you to everyone who has offered us kindness and support over the years."
The split will come as a shock to fans as the couple showing no signs of tension between them and Demi was even talking marriage in February.
Appearing on the Ellen Show the singer admitted she was ready to tie the knot with her boyfriend.
When Degeneres asked if there was any truth to the rumour they were engaged, Lovato, 23, lifted up her left hand and said: “I don’t see a ring… I wouldn’t mind if I saw one.”
The couple began dating in 2010 and after initially raising eyebrows over the 13-year age gap, were reluctant to talk openly about the romance.
Over the last few years though they've been more open about the relationship with Demi praising the That 70's Show star for helping her with her personal issues.
Earlier this year she told Latina Magazine: "When I dated white guys, it wasn't as passionate as my relationship with Wilmer. Maybe that's just Wilmer. But I do believe that Latin people are just more expressive, more passionate with their emotions."
“He's protective and he cares so much and loves so hard. I've been blessed enough to have him in my life, and not just as my man, but also my best friend.
"I've been my heaviest in my relationship with Wilmer and also been my thinnest.
"He's seen it all and loves me equally, and it gives me confidence to know that."
They seemed head-over-heels at the Grammy Awards in February, where the singer performed alongside Lionel Ritchie.
Praising his girlfriend on Instagram, he wrote alongside a picture of the couple on the night: "To describe last night wouldn't come close to how it feels to see you win! So proud of you @ddlovato, but even more proud of your hard work.. Last night undeniably you set a new standard.. And I get to say I was there when... I love you angel."
